Bobby Moore & George Best lead the teams out

This is one of the photos I got from the offices of the Sunday People.

A tightly cropped shot of these two iconic football legends.

I have no idea how often they played against each other previously, in the 60s and 70s – although as the picture below shows, they did play against each other in this game – West Ham v Manchester Utd on New Year’s Day 1972. West Ham won the match 3-0.

They were also on the same team in the 1976-77 season, when George Best joined Moore at Fulham, playing in (what was then known as) the Second Division.

At the time of the match at Wembley, Moore was apparently manager of Southend United, having joined them during 1984.

According to Wikipedia, in his first full season of 1984-85,  Southend “narrowly avoided having to apply for re-election to the Football League amid severe financial difficulties”. The following season, with a rebuilt side, Southend apparently did much better and were in the promotion race until the new year, eventually finishing 9th.
