On arrival at the Stadium, we made our way to the dressing rooms via an open function room where the various dignitaries and special guests were being served lunch.

I spotted Elton John amongst the diners – he was guest of honour, due to meet the Brentford & Wigan teams before the kick-off and present the trophy afterwards.

I asked if I could take a photo of him – and he seemed happy enough to oblige. Looks like they were enjoying a post-meal cuppa by that stage anyway, and he seemed in a good mood!

I can’t remember if I asked or he offered, but either way, he was even kind enough to get up and pose for a photo standing next to me.

Looks like he has his Watford FC tie on – I think he would have still been chairman of the club at this time.

Finally, in this section here’s a proper professional photo – from the Sunday People archive – of Elton meeting and greeting the players before kick-off. I’m not sure how I got this, as I wouldn’t have bothered to buy this from the newspaper offices when I visited. I must have been sent some extra photos at a later point.
