This photo – also from the Sunday People archive – shows Martin Peters and Bobby Moore lining up for the England side, before kick-off.
I am not sure the exact line-up of the team – perhaps I should look a little closer at the list of autographs I have, most notably in the inside back cover of the match programme.
From memory – and the evidence I can see from my autographs – the 1985 side included all the following:
Not from the 1966 World Cup winning side but also in the England team that day were:
Peter Bonetti (in place of Gordon Banks, ex-Chelsea and England goalkeeper)
Emlyn Hughes (ex-Liverpool and England captain)
Stan Bowles (ex-QPR and England)
I do have an audio cassette of the match commentary somewhere – and when I get round to finding it, and digitising it, I will hopefully be able to complete the line-up. Suggestions welcome – let me know if you know!
In the July after this match around 8 weeks later, the full 1966 England side took on the 1966 West Germany in a rematch of the 1966 Final, in another fund-raising match for the Bradford City Fire Appeal. That match took place at Elland Rd – and you read more about it here in this report from the Guardian.
You can also watch footage of the match including interviews with the likes of Bobby Moore, Alan Ball, Gordon Banks, Nobby Stiles, Bobby Charlton and Franz Beckenbauer, via the videos below.
